This Week in 90’s Wrestling: March 1st-7th

MARCH 2

1990

Jerry Lawler squared off against Jimmy Valiant at the Dallas Sportatorium on a USWA card. Valiant had nothing left by this point, so the match was not really good, but they crafted something awfully entertaining all the same. Highlights included the Boogie Woogie Man kissing the referee before the match started with Lawler insisting on a disqualification that he did not get. Then, Lawler insisted on Valiant taking his doorag off. Valiant complied, then wiped it on his ass and chased Lawler around the ring with it. When Lawler hid behind the referee, Valiant started spanking the referee. Then, he kissed the cameraman, who got an on-screen graphic that said “Skip Collins – Cameraman. Kissed By Valiant.” Marc Lowrance also had one of his better quotes, when he said “Jerry Lawler has been known to store can openers, slugs and other paraphernalia in his trunks.”

1991

A round-robin, three-match series was scheduled for the March 4 Mid-South Coliseum show, where Jeff Jarrett, Jerry Lawler and Eddie Gilbert would face each other in a series of singles matches, with the winner of the mini-tournament declared the new Unified World Champion. However, Jeff Jarrett sacrificed his spot so that he can get his hands on Team Texas in another match on the card. Jarrett was replaced by Steve Austin. Jarrett asked Gilbert or Lawler to team with him, but both of them were hesitant to give up a title opportunity.

The Brother Love character met his end on WWF Superstars, when the Ultimate Warrior destroyed him and sent him packing to demonstrate that he was capable of ending careers going into the high-stakes match against Randy Savage at WrestleMania VII.

Joel Goodheart’s Tri-State Wrestling Alliance (TWA) held a show in Philadelphia headlined by Jerry Lawler facing Terry Funk in a wild match where fans out of the audience were selected as lumberjacks. The fans selected were quite eager to get involved in the action.

1994

WAR held a card at Tokyo’s Sumo Hall in front of a sellout 11,000 fans, headlined by Genichiro Tenryu and Ashura Hara facing Atsushi Onita and Tarzan Goto in a **** match selected as Match of the Year by Tokyo Sports. On the undercard, Ultimo Dragon and Masao Orihara faced the Great Sasuke and Sato (Dick Togo) in a *** match.

1998

WWF Monday Night RAW aired live from Cleveland, OH, in front of 15,643 fans. In the key angle of the night, Mike Tyson joined DX after teasing an altercation with Shawn Michaels. Also on the show, Gennifer Flowers sent in a taped promo regarding her involvement in WrestleMania. In the main event, Steve Austin was scheduled to face Kane in a match that had been hyped for weeks, but was simply a bait-and-switch. DX attacked Austin at the entrance ramp and Undertaker returned to set up his match against Kane at WrestleMania.
