This Week in 90’s Wrestling: March 1st-7th



Rip Rogers announced that he would do squats for the entire hour of SMW television to show himself to be the most fit guy in the territory. Tim Horner bet $500 that he could not pull this off and later kicked the chair out from under him at 59:30 in a series of segments that read better than they actually were.

The build to WrestleMania VIII was underway on WWF Superstars, as Ric Flair produced pictures of himself with Miss Elizabeth and alleged to Randy Savage, “She was mine before she was yours.”


WAR and New Japan held a loaded joint show at Korakuen Hall which drew a sellout 2,200 fans. While the show was never released commercially, a fan in the stands used a camcorder to capture the action. The best match of the night saw El Samurai face Ultimo Dragon in a ****1/2 match that was in the top handful of career matches for both men. Koki Kitahara also faced Kuniaki Kobayashi in a ***1/4 match and in the main event, Shinya Hashimoto and Michiyoshi Ohara faced Ashura Hara and Ricky Fuyuki in a **** match.


The USWA headlined a Memphis Memories card at Mid South Coliseum with a ***1/4 10-way elimination match involving Jerry Lawler, Jimmy Valiant, Brian Christopher, Austin Idol, Terry Funk, Tommy Rich, Moondog Spot, Koko B. Ware, Eddie Gilbert and Doug Gilbert.


New Japan Pro Wrestling held a card in Ishikawa which included a wild **** match where Masa Chono and Hiroyoshi Tenzan faced Hiroshi Hase and Kensuke Sasaki.


ECW held a house show in Revere, MA, which included a ***1/2 match between Shane Douglas and 2 Cold Scorpio.


Onita Pro held a card at Korakuen Hall where Atsushi Onita and Masato Tanaka faced Yukihiro Kanemura and Shoji Nakamaki in a ***3/4 no rope barbed wire street fight.

Kurt Angle made his first appearance on WWF television, defending America’s honor in a throwaway segment with Tiger Ali Singh.
