Vintage Vault “Pre-Viewing of Punk”: Royal Rumble 2010

The Royal Rumble match

We enter a new year and a new decade for WWE as we always start off with the Royal Rumble, and coming out of 2009 CM Punk was in a unique position as he seemed to be out of the title picture, but was more focused on building up his heat as well as his own faction. In the weeks leading up to this show, he had in essence “converted” Festus into Luke Gallows and would also add the newcomer Serena to the group, and he was almost taking on the role of a cult leader pushing his Straight Edge beliefs on everyone. Even though he was in the Rumble, he was not one of the focal points as there was a lot of focus on other top stars in the Rumble including Shawn Michaels, Triple H, John Cena, Batista, Chris Jericho, and a few others as this Rumble was fairly stacked with top talent. It would be interesting to see since Punk was more than likely not going to win how well he did in the match, given that he was still one of the top heels on Smackdown despite not being the top heel.

On the 12/15 RAW, Punk would win a Slammy Award for driving Jeff Hardy out of WWE though he would lose to Cena in the Superstar of the Year tournament, and on the 12/18 Smackdown he would team with Gallows and Drew McIntyre to defeat R-Truth, John Morrison, and Matt Hardy. At Tribute to the Troops on 12/19, Punk and Carlito would lose a tag match to Rey Mysterio and Mark Henry, and on the 12/25 Smackdown Morrison, Truth, Hardy, and Finlay defeated Punk, Gallows, McIntyre, and Dolph Ziggler in an 8-man tag. On the 1/1 Smackdown, Punk cut a promo talking about wanting to save everyone before defeating Hardy in a Beat the Clock Challenge, and on the 1/8 Smackdown Punk brought a fan into the ring and the fan pledged to follow the Straight Edge lifestyle as Punk and Gallows shaved his head bald. On the 1/15 Smackdown, Punk cut another promo vowing to win the Rumble as another random fan came into the ring and Punk and Gallows would shave his head bald, and on the 1/22 Smackdown Punk cut another promo as a female fan rushed at him with security taking her away until Punk had them bring her back. She introduced herself as Serena and Punk would shave her head bald as she pledged her allegiance to him, and on the 1/29 Smackdown Punk cut a promo on D-X who were on the show and Triple H would defeat Punk by DQ as the SES looked to shave his head until Michaels made the save. The rest of the build for the Rumble focused around the top guys looking to win, specifically Michaels who wanted to win so he could get the Undertaker in a WrestleMania rematch. Punk’s build was fairly good as again he was pretty much focused on building up his character and faction while also being a favorite to win the Rumble.

We get a great video package hyping the Rumble and going over the stats, and then Dolph Ziggler comes out at #1 to decent heat as a heel while Evan Bourne comes out at #2 to a good pop from the crowd. The two men square off to start the match and both look up at the WM sign as Bourne blocks a shot and kicks at Ziggler’s leg repeatedly, and Ziggler reverses a whip and Bourne hits a headscissors before hitting a spin kick only for Ziggler to ram Bourne into the buckle. He pounds on Bourne in the corner and hits a dropkick that nearly sends Bourne over the top as he pounds on him, and Bourne drives Ziggler into the mat with his knees and Ziggler catches him with a back elbow as Bourne leaps to the top rope and attempts a headscissors to send Ziggler over the top though Ziggler rolls back in. He says that he will be the first Straight Edge Rumble winner as the Great Khali comes out at #5, and Punk says that he can save Khali and make him greater as he says that Khali needs to be saved. He asks Khali to raise his right hand which he does and he asks if Khali will accept straight edge into his life, but Khali hits a chop and hooks the vice grip on Punk as we get a shocker at #6 with Beth Phoenix coming out making her the second woman to enter the Rumble. The match itself was great as all 30 men worked hard and put on a solid Rumble that moved at a very quick pace, and I believe this has to be one of the shorter Rumbles in history as it goes just under 50 minutes in total which is crazy. There was a good amount of starpower in the match and things flowed pretty easily as there were no real dead spots throughout the match, and it never felt too congested as well as the most we had at one time was 9 and there wasn’t a ton of longevity. We did have two men go over 20 minutes in Cena and Michaels while a few others did make it over 10, and there were some good stories throughout with the biggest one being Michaels trying to win. In terms of Punk, even though he only lasted 10 minutes exactly, he did have a strong showing as he dominated the first third of the Rumble and got 5 eliminations before finally getting eliminated by Triple H. But the big shocker of the match was Edge making his return and winning as he is now headed to WrestleMania and the only question now is which title will he go for. The crowd was hot for the match though there were a few spots where they did die off a bit, but they did pop big for Edge when he won. Edge gets the win in a shocker and is headed to WrestleMania while we wait to see where Punk goes next after this.

Final Grade: ***3/4
