Welcome to the Wednesday Walk Around the Web, where we weave & wind through weblinks weekly. Hopefully you will find the links on offer amusing, interesting, or, occasionally, profound. Views expressed in the Wednesday Walk do not necessarily reflect those of anyone but the writer.
- It’s always inspiring to see the creation of new life.
- Microsoft is finally trying to stem the tide of nonsensical forced password changes, and not a moment too soon.
- Jonathan Van Ness, the beating heart of the new Queer Eye, came out as nonbinary the other day. Happy Pride!
- Happy Pride to Botswana, whose high court has nullified a colonial-era law criminalizing sex, allowing queer people to live with their partners without fear of targeted police crackdowns on the premise that they may be having sex.
- Sometimes when an object rolls onto the highway, it causes a huge traffic jam until it can be cleared. Sometimes it can’t be cleared, and becomes a new tourist attraction with a highway swerving around it.
- Ransom is the endgame of a lot of theft & hacking, but a lot of folks don’t have the ability to respond to ransom demands the way Radiohead did — by putting the stolen session archives from the OK Computer era up on Bandcamp, with proceeds going to a good cause rather than a thief’s pockets.
- PTBN host JT Rozzero brings word of a Wendy’s employee who’s maybe a little too enthusiastic about hygiene. Maybe after a long shift it’d be more relaxing to fill the sink from the ice machine and get a nice pro-athlete-style ice bath.
- Wage theft is pretty rampant, in ways both subtle and gross, and the state of workers’ rights (at least in the US) makes it extremely hard to recover any stolen wages.
- (Warning: Religion, sexual assault) In suburban New Jersey, a Presbyterian minister took advantage of men he had influence and power over, by performing oral sex on them as part of an exorcism ritual.
- This Week in Huge Cybersecurity Failures: A US border patrol database containing full-face photos and licence plates of people crossing the border is in the wind.
- PTBN Pop Grand Poobah Todd Weber brings word of a less than artful effort at a fake license plate. Seriously now, you really have to try harder than that. A little bit of metalworking practice should get you a much better copy than that.
- This Week in Body Modification: Losing an arm can be painful and traumatic, but turning your prosthetic arm into an attached tattoo gun is certainly a plus.
