Welcome to the Wednesday Walk Around the Web, where we weave & wind through weblinks weekly. Hopefully you will find the links on offer amusing, interesting, or, occasionally, profound. Views expressed in the Wednesday Walk do not necessarily reflect those of anyone but the writer.
- We still need your advice questions for Steve Wille’s guest appearances on the ol’ Spectacular — big or small, we’ll consider them all! Email us or go to our Ask.fm page to send your questions today. (Your name won’t be read on the show without permission (so tell us what to call you if anything), and Ask.fm allows anonymous submissions.)
- When the Toronto SkyDome opened, it held a contest to decide its name, and the person who won has had free tickets to any event of her choice ever since.
- When should you cut people off on Facebook? Let Aristotle help. It may indeed be cowardly of me to indulge in some black-and-white thinking on this matter, leading to a hasty unfriend/unfollow finger, but I usually think of it as a matter of mental health.
- This Week in Literature: Often the question is asked, what sort of dick pics would the protagonists of Serious Literature take? (Link is SFW; links therefrom are not.)
- My Boy An-Day brings word of Monster of the Week, the most precise X-Files recap site I know of.
- Neil Young has a new site for, it seems, his whole discography, offered at high quality. I would not have pegged Neil Young as a big audiophile, but righto.
- The institution of the adult movie theater is dying; get to your local theater while you can.
- Meanwhile, the gender reveal party really needs to die.
- I’m highly skeptical of Alexa and similar devices, but if they help people with dementia stay stable and independent a little longer, that’s certainly worthwhile. For the rest of us, though, let’s try to temper the rush to buy more surveillance devices that constantly record everything you say, all right?
- Right now, Russia is banned from the Winter Olympics. It’ll certainly be an eventful few months for the athletes waiting to see if they’ll be able to go, or deciding if they want to go as unaffiliated athletes.
- Last week saw the climactic Tetris World Championship. It’s really quite gripping at points. The commentary for these things fascinates me, though — I too love to see a juicy middle well.
- After spending a year in space, sadly Scott Kelly’s health isn’t quite what everyone would’ve hoped. The implications for what we ask astronauts to give up for the sake of future long-term missions are…uncomfortable.
- The recipe video reaction video might be the next viral video genre, piggybacking on the recipe videos nobody in the history of the human race has ever turned the sound on for. And I must say, the man has a point about the desecration of mac & cheese.
