Welcome to the Wednesday Walk Around the Web, where we weave & wind through weblinks weekly. Hopefully you will find the links on offer amusing, interesting, or, occasionally, profound. Views expressed in the Wednesday Walk do not necessarily reflect those of anyone but the writer. Do you have a link you want to see featured in next week’s Walk? Comment on the Walk post at the Place to Be Nation Facebook page, or find Glenn on the social media platform of your choice!
- This Week in Hate Crimes at Gay Bars: five were killed in a shootout at a bar in Veracruz.
- Of all the wars to reenact, the Cold War might be the most difficult.
- The T-Rex running the American Ninja Warrior course is the only clip I’ve ever seen of American Ninja Warrior, and I think I’ve probably peaked at this point.
- I generally try to avoid absolute statements, but there’s one I do hold dear: whining about “kids these days” is always bullshit. Always.
- This Week in Dull Horror: direct observation gets doctors to wash their hands 57 percent of the time, up from 22 percent when they don’t know they’re being observed.
- PTBN’s own Jason Greenhouse would like anyone who’s bought something from Ticketmaster to check your accounts and see what vouchers you have for free or discounted tickets.
- RIP Anton Yelchin.
- This Week in Cover Songs: “Every Breath You Take” is now even more stalkery. Sorry.
- Never forget Logical Fallacy Ed Hochuli, always here to ref your arguments.
- This Week in Wednesday Walk Top Tips: for the PTBN parents out there, you may want to invest in a soundproof sex box to protect the little one from hearing things they oughtn’t.
- This Week in Art: Starry Night, rendered with water as the canvas. Simply amazing.
- This Week in Maps: a 16th-century Ottoman map of Europe overlaid over a modern map. Piri Reis got the Mediterranean coast pretty much right, but Scandinavia was apparently a big ol’ mystery. Also, I’m pretty sure that map still shows Hadrian’s wall, so well done.
- The way you deal with shark attacks isn’t by hunting sharks — the ocean is their home, not ours — but by making wetsuits that repel them.
- This Week in the X-Men: Hank McCoy did a piss-poor job designing Xavier’s wheelchair and he needs to hear about it. (Also: the production designers.) Give us an X-Men movie with some freakin’ wheelchair ramps in the X-Mansion, it’s Xavier’s damned house.
- Green screen the queen!
- I can’t wait to get my cat some wine. MosCATo indeed.
