This Week in 90’s Wrestling: February 1st – 7th

Michinoku Pro had one of their first standout multi-man matches, which would eventually become their calling card, to cap off a card at Korakuen Hall. The Great Sasuke teamed with Sato and Shiryu to face Super Delphin, Jinsei Shinzaki and Gran Naniwa in a ****1/4 match.

Shawn Michaels used his Heartbreak Hotel segment on WWF Superstars to announce that he was looking for a new bodyguard before interviewing a cardboard cutout of Diesel to continue the hype for their WWF World Title match at WrestleMania XI.

On SMW television, The Gangstas told Tracy Smothers and Scott Armstrong that they were not scared of them, even going as far as to say “You bring your flag, we’ll bring ours.” Jim Cornette responded with a promo later in the show that was filled with racist jokes.

ECW held Double Tables at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, headlined by Sabu and Taz teaming to face Public Enemy in a Tables match, one of the first of its kind. The in-ring highlight was a ***1/2 match between Chris Benoit and Al Snow that, while good, was oversold by announcer Joey Styles, claiming within the first five minutes that the match already had more wrestling in it than any match on pay-per-view in the previous five years.

The Triple Threat swerved everyone on ECW television when Bam Bam Bigelow turned on Taz during a match where he teamed with Bam Bam Bigelow against Chris Candido, Shane Douglas and Lance Storm. Storm was not part of the swerve and ended up attacked by the trio as well.
