This Week in 90’s Wrestling: February 15th – 21st

FEBRUARY 20

1993

SMW television included an angle where the Dirty White Boy attacked Tracy Smothers and used scissors to shred the Confederate flag before lighting it on fire. Because this was SMW, he was presented as a heel. Also on the show, the Rock & Roll Express defeated the Stud Stable in a match to determine the number one contenders to the SMW Tag Team Titles. The Heavenly Bodies and Jim Cornette were at ringside eating popcorn and drinking soda. The finish saw Jimmy Golden scatter Bobby Eaton’s popcorn everywhere. Eaton retaliated by throwing his drink in Golden’s face, leaving him prone to be pinned by the Rock & Rolls.

WCW Saturday Night aired a show taped on February 8 at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theatre. The show ended up as the last one of the Bill Watts regime, as Watts resigned shortly after this taping and was gone by the time this aired on television. This was also the last WCW show Jim Ross ever broadcasted. The main event was a great, 25-minute **** lumberjack match between Brian Pillman and Ricky Steamboat with something you almost never see — a finish that happened during the commercial break.

1994

WCW SuperBrawl IV aired live from Albany, GA, in front of 7,600 fans. In a strange promotional twist, more than 1,000 tickets were given away to fans who turned in their handgun. The main event saw Ric Flair defeat Vader in a disappointing cage match with Vader, with The Boss as the referee. The best match on the show was a ****1/4, near 30 minute match between Steven Regal and Arn Anderson. Oddly enough, this is the only WCW pay-per-view that was never released as a commercial video for whatever reason. The show did a low 142,000 buys, and you can watch it on the WWE Network.

1995

WWF Monday Night RAW aired live from Macon, GA, in front of 2,751 fans. The show was heavily papered, indicative of the WWF’s cold product at the time. Shawn Michaels debuted Sid Vicious/Justice (now simply billed as “Sid”) as his bodyguard and in the main event, Diesel successfully defended the WWF World Title against WWF Intercontinental Champion Jeff Jarrett. You can watch the show on the WWE Network.
