Day Nineteen: Best WrestleMania Women’s Matches

Others Getting Votes: Snooki, Trish Stratus & John Morrison vs. Layla, Michelle McCool & Dolph Ziggler – WMXXVII (10), Trish Stratus vs. Christy Hemme – WM21 (6), Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs. Beth Phoenix & Eve – WMXXVIII (5), Velvet McIntyre vs. Fabulous Moolah – WM2 (4), Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal – WMXXV (3), Ashley vs. Melina – WM23 (3)

10. Chyna vs. Ivory – WWF Women’s Title – WrestleMania X7 (12 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#7 (Chris Jordan)

As 2001 dawned, Chyna had shifted her sights from men’s championships to the top prize of the women’s division. A belt that sat around the waist of Ivory. They would clash at the Royal Rumble, but during a handspring elbow, Chyna suffered a neck injury that would nearly end her career. After some rehab, she showed up in Houston with revenge in mind, leading to a gratifying squash of the Queen of the RTC. It would be Chyna’s final moment of glory before her ugly divorce from the promotion months later.

9. Vickie Guerrero Invitational – WWE Divas Championship – WrestleMania XXX (14 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#6 (Glenn Butler)

With AJ Lee clutching a death grip around the WWE Divas Championship, GM Vickie Guerrero was doing whatever she could to take the title from her after overhearing AJ disparaging her, including tossing her into a match with 13 other Divas at WrestleMania XXX. AJ would stave off the field and escape with the win and title in this division showcase, once again foiling Guerrero.

8. Alundra Blayze vs. Leilani Kai – WWF Women’s Title – WrestleMania X (37 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#3 (Scott Criscuolo, Glenn Butler, Neil Trama, Steven Ferrari, Chris Jordan & Steve Riddle)

After years of dormancy, the WWF Women’s Title was resuscitated and won by the recently debuted Alundra Blayze. To show off the title and the centerpiece of the division, Blayze was given a match at WrestleMania. In a nice piece of continuity, the first ever women to defend the title at a WrestleMania, Leilani Kai, was brought back to challenge for the gold. The match was pretty paint-by-numbers but the idea to bring Kai back was an inspired one and was a cool moment to show off the rechristened division.

7. AJ Lee & Paige vs. Nikki & Brie Bella – WrestleMania 31 (44 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#3 (Jason Greenhouse)

By the time WrestleMania 31 rolled around it was pretty common knowledge that AJ Lee’s time in WWE was just about up so in a nice passing of the torch moment, she teamed up with the new ace of the division, Paige, to battle the Bella Twins. It was a perfect snapshot of the eventual transition of the division’s focus: the “real” wrestlers vs. the Divas. AJ and Paige would win the bout, sending Ms. Lee out a winner after an impressive, albeit quite short, career.

6. Trish Stratus vs. Lita vs. Jazz – WWF Women’s Title – WrestleMania X8 (49 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#3 (Tim Capel & Brian Bayless)

Back in November, Trish Stratus shocked everyone when she captured the Women’s Title at Survivor Series. Following her win she slowly and steadily began developing and improving, even despite losing her gold to the recently debuted Jazz. Trish would get another crack at the title in her hometown of Toronto at WrestleMania X8 but she and Lita came up short of winning the bout and gold as Jazz was victorious in the end.

5. Trish Stratus vs. Victoria vs. Jazz – WWE Women’s Title – WrestleMania XIX (57 Points)
Highest
Ranking: #2 (Tim Capel)

A year later, Trish Stratus again found herself challenging for the title and yet again Jazz was in the match. However, this time third woman was Trish’s top rival and current champion, Victoria. The match chugged along at a nice pace and exhibited both the improvement of Trish and the division over the past twelve months. This time, Trish would win the match and recapture her beloved title.

4. Molly Holly vs. Victoria – WWE Women’s Title Haircut Match – WrestleMania XX (58 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#4 (Glenn Butler, Jason Greenhouse & Steve Riddle)

By 2004, Victoria had eschewed her psycho tendencies and settled into a role of steady face veteran atop the division. The stalwart Molly Holly began chasing Victoria and the title, leading to a culmination at WrestleMania with the added intrigue that Molly put her hair on the line to counteract Victoria putting up the championship. The match was solid but the strong memory is of the post match shearing as Molly’s lovely locks were left on the MSG stage.

3. Wendi Richter vs. Leilani Kai – WWF Women’s Title – WrestleMania I (60 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#3 (Scott Criscuolo, Glenn Butler, Neil Trama, Steven Ferrari, Chris Jordan & Steve Riddle)

The match that kicked off the tradition of the Women’s Title being showcased at WrestleMania was indeed an iconic one, born out of the gigantic arms of the Rock ‘N’ Wrestling Connection. Aligning Wendi Richter with the molten hot Cyndi Lauper was genius and it led to a wild rock concert atmosphere as Richter knocked off Leilani Kai and her manager Fabulous Moolah to regain the title. WrestleMania was built on the back of this match just as much as the main event and its importance to the show’s success should never be overlooked.

2. Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James – WWE Women’s Title – WrestleMania 22 (89 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#1 (Neil Trama)

For many years, Trish Stratus’s WrestleMania title defense against Mickie James was held up as the gold standard of WrestleMania Women’s Title matches. It had great ring work, a deep storyline and very memorable moments all woven into Mickie’s big time win. The crowd was hooked in the whole way through and by the time Mickie famously grabbed Trish’s crotch and licked her fingers, they were in her corner. It rightfully belongs here as one of the greatest Mania women’s matches in the show’s history.

1. Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch – WWE Women’s Title – WrestleMania 32 (99 Points)
Highest Ranking:
#1 (Scott Criscuolo, Glenn Butler, Mike Eller, Tim Capel, Steven Ferrari, Chris Jordan, Jason Greenhouse, Brian Bayless & Steve Riddle)

Just one point shy of a unanimous choice for number one is fittingly the official rebirth of the WWF Women’s Title and refocused division. Charlotte would ditch the butterfly belt before the bell and proceed to survive a high flying, hard hitting war against Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch to walk out as Women’s Champion. These ladies would have better matches on other shows, but this one made a statement that the revolution was real and that the women’s division would no longer be background time filler from here on out.
