PTBN’s World Cup of TV Characters – Knockout Round Three, Day Four

old-television

The critically acclaimed “Mad Men” wrapping up for good in Spring 2015 has caused many television critics to announce the finale as the unofficial end of the Golden Age of Television. The world of television has now been producing memorable characters for close to 70 years. Sitting at Sunday dinner at my grandmother’s house, passing around fried okra and chicken casserole, I remember being gobsmacked at my grandparents discussing a world without TV being a prominent fixture of every evening’s activity. Even with their affinity for the “good old days”, that still didn’t stop my grandparents from laughing uproariously at Andy Griffith and Barney Fife trying to eat some of Aunt Bee’s terrible pickles in an episode they have seen numerous times. Trendy activities currently include running marathons, hiking, and crafting. Yet, my wife and I get more satisfaction and bonding together as a married couple in analyzing a great dramatic episode of television or wiping tears away and falling into each other from laughing so hard. The characters selected to participate in this poll were all giants of the small screen. They have become our heroes, enemies, mentors, and friends. Place to be Nation is proud to announce a tournament to determine the greatest TV character of all time.

– Chad Campbell

Here is how the process works. The first round will consist of 32 groups of 8 TV characters. This is consistent with the group format used in the World Cup. The total number of TV characters in the entire tournament is 256 and was vetted with PTBN staff members and non-staff TV experts. It is possible that an individual’s personal favorite TV star didn’t make the cut, but we feel confident at PTBN that these 256 individuals cross all genres and are the giants of television. From each group, FOUR TV characters were voted on to advance to the knockout round.  Those 128 characters were ranked #1 through #128 based on percentage of victory within their group.  Each day FOUR head to head matchups will be released consisting of one matchup from each region.  The tournament will play out in standard format with two TV characters going at it head to head with the top vote-getter advancing. Let the games begin!
