Pop Goes The Classics – Pocahontas (1995)

On the twenty-ninth installment of the Pop Goes The Classics series looking at the Disney animated features, Mirandia Berthold, Andy Atherton & Steve Riddle look at 1995’s Pocahontas. They discuss the many aspects of the film including: the challenge the film had following the massive success of The Lion King; the effective setting the stage of the explorer’s dangerous voyage to the America as well as the conveyance of the native American way of life; the Romeo & Juliet aspects of the story with John Smith & Pocahontas; the fun sidekicks Meeko, Flit & Percy; the musical score and how the songs “Just Around The Riverbend” & “Colors of the Wind” move the story forward; Grandmother Willow’s sage advice; the delusions, ignorance and ruthlessness of Governor Ratcliffe; how the movie doesn’t shy away from violence; how historically accurate it is and whether or not the ending is a satisfying one.
