Topic: The non-WWE MOTY was… ?
Steven: LA Park vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. from May is my number two MOTY.
Kyle: ROH has Steel Cage Warefare, or any of three tag title changes from the summer as contenders.
Justin: Champs vs. All Stars main event is also a strong contender for ROH.
Callum: I mean, I think this is dangerous. Because I’d vote for a triple threat from PROGRESS Wrestling Chapter Nine.
Kyle: Another great one from Justin.
Chad: Champions vs. All stars is my ROH pick, 75 minutes of real good storytelling, not a ton of kickouts and it did a great job at rehabilitating Elgin.
Steven: Overall MOTY: 1) Punk vs. Brock from SummerSlam 2) LA Park vs. Dr. Wagner Jr. from TXT on May 11 3) Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kota Ibushi from NJPW G1 Climax
Chad: Who was in that Callum?
Steven: Am I alone on watching any lucha this year?
Chad: No Way! Lucha has had a great year especially in CMLL with the main feuds they have been building throughout the year.
Steven: It’s probably some of the best stuff this year, at least the Negro Casas vs. Rush feud. It’s all on YouTube too. Almost every match from all TV shows, posted each week.
Callum: Chad – Zack Sabre Jr, Ricochet and Mark Haskins
Justin: I will toss a vote in for Roddy Strong vs. Paul London. Kyle, what did you think of that one?
Mark: Punk/Lesnar is my WWE. Non-WWE is Tanahashi/Okada. Which one of their matches is a toss-up. Leaning towards the April match.
Kyle: I thought it was great stuff. Paul London isn’t a washed up old man and proved it in that match.
Justin: I was disappointed in his match with Elgin, but this match blew me away.
Steven: Hey I saw that London vs. Elgin match live in Toronto.
Kyle: You too? I was at that show. A huge chunk of the people left BEFORE the main event thinking Cole vs Lethal was it.
Steven: I was so disappointed with the main event because Alex Koslov did not do his Russian dance with kicks!
Kyle: Yeah, but Davey’s anti Canada stick was hysterical.
Brett: Like I said, I think it’s Cena/Punk for me. Non-WWE match will take some thought. It’ll probably be from PWG. They’re hands down my promotion of the year.
Dave: Non-WWE, Okada/Tanahashi from Invasion Attack is pretty much perfect.
Steve Wille: For best match, my top three are as follows:
1) Champions vs. All-Stars, Glory by Honor 2) Cena vs. Punk, RAW 3) Roderick Strong vs. Paul London, Glory by Honor
My top three are clearly clouded by my live attendance at GBH, but those who have seen the matches tend to concur with how solid they were. I’ve only been watching TNA regularly since BFG, so I don’t feel qualified to judge that.
Topic – The one match I feel I like better than anyone else is? This can be a hidden gem from the year.
Andrew: Bryan/Cesaro is a great one that everyone loved. For a hidden gem, I would mention AJ vs Magnus the month before Bound for Glory.
Ben: Is the Cesaro/Kingston series from April considered a hidden gem? Most people dug it who saw it, but how many people remember it?
Derrick: I remember it. They actually did some real good work in their series
Chad: I would say that is a good candidate, the one I was leaning on was Sheamus/Cesaro from early June on Main Event. Sheamus’ best face match and a really physical style wrestled vs. Cesaro.
Steven: Most underrated to me would be Volador Jr. vs. La Sombra from the CMLL Anniversary Show.
Greg: I second Andrew’s choice of Styles/Magnus for hidden gem. I’ll throw in Aries/Styles I as well, though it had a crap finish.
Steve Wille: The entire Sami Zayn vs. Antonio Cesaro feud on NXT would be my choice.
Ben: I would comfortably put Styles/Aries in the mix for hidden gem. Like Greg said, bad finish, but a really good match.
Brett: My “hidden gem” would be Cesaro/Zayn 2 out of 3 falls if that counts, but I feel like everyone who saw that match would have it in their top 10 (at worst) matches of the year.
