Welcome to the Wednesday Walk Around the Web, where we weave & wind through weblinks weekly. Hopefully you will find the links on offer amusing, interesting, or, occasionally, profound. Views expressed in the Wednesday Walk do not necessarily reflect those of anyone but the writer.
- Inspirobot combines stock photos with randomized pieces of inspirational slogans, providing more encouragement than any intentional inspirational poster ever has in this writer’s opinion. Share your favorites in the comments!(!!)
- So here’s a thing I just learned was believed by real people: Nostradamus predicted “Gangnam Style” hitting one billion YouTube views, as a sign of the end times.
- The Earth is a sandwich. Take that, Hodgman!
- Steve Wille sends word of some signs people have put up to warn others about a public menace.
- Some of us grew up hearing about the dangers of heavy metal. It’ll turn you to satanism almost as quickly as Dungeons & Dragons, you know. It seems, however, that there may be an actual danger of brain damage from headbanging. It’s up to you whether you think it’s worth the risk.
- This Week in Oral Histories of Everything: From Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Z.
- This Week in Heroes of History: Robert Smalls was a slave who stole a Confederate steam ship along with an enslaved crew and their families, ran a white bedsheet up the flagpole, and steamed right to the US ships blockading Charleston Harbor. They should put up a statue or two of him.
- (Warning: suicide.) Don’t call suicide “selfish” or “cowardly” or any other similar ignorant, hateful hogwash. Don’t do it, and don’t let it pass when you see people doing it.
- The best anarchism is anarchist geometry.
- Drawing the US states from memory is surprisingly hard. I mean, not for Al Franken, but still.
- We can all breathe a sigh of relief: MS Paint isn’t actually going away, they’re just changing the corporate branding a little. I mean, it was only ever supposedly going away for people using Windows 10, and how many of those people are there really?
- People have always been people, and even the ancient Egyptians bemoaned the lack of originality in their art. Man, those dynasties lasted for centuries and centuries…I wonder how many times they rebooted Spider-Man.
- There is a direct statistical correlation between the transfer of military equipment to cops and murders committed by those cops.
- I’m glad they’re making the changes that need to be made during post-production on Justice League.
- This Week in Animal-Assisted Relaxation: Put on your headphones and do some deep-breathing exercises while watching this caterpillar eat a leaf. It’s very satisfying.

If MS Paint went away i’d have no way to re-size PTBN pictures to 600×337! I still use it daily.
I’m working off of a copy of Paint Shop Pro I’ve had since the mid-90s. (Also searching Google Images for images that’re already 600×337, since a lot of our stretched/squished images look TRBL.)
Oh I don’t squish, there are ways around that with cropping at what not.
Paint shop pro is a name i haven’t seen in quite some time (since the mid 90s!)
Here on my work desktop, I’m on day 628 of my 30-day trial period! Old shareware is the best.
WinRAR is my favorite trial that never actually expires and i’ve used for two decades.
Every time we get new company laptops and everyone has to install everything again, I try to get them on the WinRAR tip. Hasn’t worked yet.
