This Week in 90’s Wrestling: March 15th – 21st

MARCH 18

1990

Tully Blanchard made a cameo in the AWA at a Rochester, MN, show where he teamed with The Destruction Crew to face DJ Peterson, The Trooper and Paul Diamond in an elimination match where he outworked everyone else in the ring. Tully’s career was unfortunately cut short, as he most likely had at least another five years in him as a top-level worker.

1995

ECW TV included a ***1/2 where The Sandman and Terry Funk teamed to face Cactus Jack and Shane Douglas.

WCW Saturday Night aired a show taped on March 7 and March 8 at Atlanta’s Center Stage Theatre. Bobby Eaton and Steven Regal cemented their team at the conclusion of a match between the two where Eaton got the best of Regal, who cowered away. Also on the show, Dave Sullivan attempted to save a job guy from getting squashed by Vader, but Vader and Ric Flair do a number on him. Bobby Heenan even entered the ring and pleaded with both of them to calm down in a great angle. Vader ended up stripped of the U.S. Title over this.

1996

WWF Monday Night RAW aired a show taped on March 11 in San Antonio, TX. The big angle saw a casket arrive during a quick match between Diesel and Barry Horowitz. When Diesel opened the casket, he saw himself lying in it in an interesting angle. Also on the show, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels continued their low-key build to WrestleMania XII with more training videos. The Billionaire Ted skit on this show may have been the worst of all, as they made no attempts at humor and placed Ted in a mock FTC hearing and repeatedly asked him if he was trying to put the WWF out of business. The show did a 2.9 rating, and you can watch it on the WWE Network.

WCW Monday Nitro aired live from Chattanooga, TN. In the main event, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage faced Ric Flair and Kevin Sullivan in a Texas Tornado match. The match ended in a double count-out when two wrestlers debuted in WCW. First, Za Gangsta, who is more commonly known as Zeus or actor Tiny Lister. Second was a wrestler billed as The Final Solution, whose name was quickly changed after complaints from viewers, as the term was a Nazi term for extermination of Jews. He was quickly changed to The Final Annihilation. The show did a 3.6 rating, and you can watch it on the WWE Network.
