The Week in 90’s Wrestling: February 22nd – 29th



The UWF held a show in Kanagawa, highlighted by Nobuhiko Takada facing Yoshiaki Fujiwara in a ****1/4 match.


All Japan Pro Wrestling held a card in Matsumoto, highlighted by Jumbo Tsuruta facing Kenta Kobashi in a **** match.


The culture wars found a home in SMW, as Tracy Smothers cut a promo explaining that the Confederate flag represented the ability to say hello to people in a nearby store, leave one’s house unlocked and not lose anything and having your children join a church instead of a street gang. Also on the show, Ricky Morton faced Bobby Eaton in a match that ended in chaos when the Stud Stable, Heavenly Bodies and Rock and Roll Express found themselves in a three-way brawl.

WCW Worldwide treated us to a short but novel match when the Rock & Roll Express teamed with Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas against the Heavenly Bodies and Hollywood Blonds. The match was taped on February 9 in Gainesville, GA.

Ric Flair appeared on WCW television for the first time since his return to the company. Before he could state what his plans were, Missy Hyatt interrupted him by screaming at him and had to be restrained by security in a twist that was never quite explained. The show drew a 3.1 rating, which was the highest in 13 months.


All Japan Women held a card at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall, highlighted by Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada facing Aja Kong and Sakie Hasegawa in a ***1/2 match.


WWF Monday Night RAW aired a show taped on February 20 in Macon, GA. Bam Bam Bigelow interrupted an interview with Lawrence Taylor via satellite and challenged LT to show up at the Wrestlemania XI press conference at the Harley Davidson Cafe in New York City. The show did a 3.4 rating, the highest in six months. You can watch it on the WWE Network.


Mae Young debuted on Power Pro TV in Memphis as the mother of Sean Stasiak. She had her working boots on right away, ending up in a pull-apart brawl with Stacy before smacking Cory Maclin around.

ECWA held the Super 8 tournament in Wilmington, DE. Christopher Daniels faced Steve Bradley in the tournament final.
